EN 124 Load Classes Explained: How to Choose the Right Manhole Cover Rating (A15–F900)

When you specify an access cover or manhole cover, the single most important number on the data sheet is its load class. Get it wrong and you risk a cracked cover, a failed inspection, a safety incident — or an expensive replacement that means breaking up finished paving. Get it right and you protect pedestrians and vehicles, satisfy code, and control cost.

This guide breaks down the six EN 124 load classes — A15, B125, C250, D400, E600 and F900 — what each rating actually means, where it should be used, and how to match the class to the right material and product for your project.

What Is EN 124?

EN 124 is the European standard for gully tops and manhole tops for vehicular and pedestrian areas. Although it originated in Europe, it is now referenced by specifiers, engineers and distributors worldwide as the default language for declaring how much weight an access cover can safely carry.

The standard groups covers into six load classes. The letter–number code tells you the rated load in kilonewtons (kN):

  • A15 = 15 kN
  • B125 = 125 kN
  • C250 = 250 kN
  • D400 = 400 kN
  • E600 = 600 kN
  • F900 = 900 kN

Important detail for procurement: during certification the cover is tested at 1.5 × the rated load. So a D400 cover is proof-tested to 600 kN before it earns its rating. When a supplier says "EN 124 D400 compliant," that means it passed the 600 kN test — not that 400 kN is its breaking point.

The Six EN 124 Load Classes at a Glance

Class by Class: Where Each Rating Belongs

A15 — Pedestrian & Landscaped Zones

A15 covers are for areas with no vehicular traffic. They are the right choice for high-end landscaping, patios, garden paths, plazas and pedestrian concourses where appearance matters as much as access. This is where flush, paveable stainless steel covers, invisible recessed covers and lightweight aluminum covers shine — they disappear into the surrounding stone or tile while still meeting the rating.

B125 — Light Vehicles & Car Parks

B125 covers handle cars and light commercial vehicles. Use them on residential driveways, pedestrian streets, and parking areas. A brushed stainless steel cover with a rubber strip (B125) is a popular pick here: the rubber reduces noise and vibration while preserving a clean architectural look.

C250 — Kerbside & Slow-Traffic Roads

C250 is specified at carriageway edges, kerbside drainage, and car parks where occasional heavier vehicles pass. It bridges the gap between pedestrian-grade and full roadway grade.

D400 — Roads, Highways & Public Car Parks

D400 is the workhorse of municipal and commercial infrastructure. If vehicles of any kind can drive over the cover, D400 is usually the minimum. Our stainless steel D400 access cover (with internal reinforcing bars), heavy-duty cast iron D400 cover, and hot-dip galvanized steel D400 cover with lift-chain system all target this class.

E600 & F900 — Industrial & Aircraft

E600 covers serve docks, airports and industrial yards with continuous heavy-vehicle movement. F900 is reserved for aircraft pavements and other extreme-duty applications. These are specialist items — talk to the factory directly about certification and custom engineering.

How to Choose the Right Class: A 4-Step Check

  1. Identify the traffic. Pedestrians only → A15. Cars/parking → B125. Kerbside/slow traffic → C250. Any public road or all-vehicle access → D400. Docks/airports/heavy industry → E600 or F900.

  2. Look at the exact location. A cover five meters inside a garden is A15; the same cover sitting at a carriageway edge jumps to C250. Position, not just "is a car nearby," defines the class.

  3. Match material to environment. Coastal, poolside or de-icing-salt exposure → 316 stainless steel. General outdoor → 304 stainless or galvanized steel. Lowest cost at high load → cast iron. Lightweight + corrosion-free → aluminum (typically A15). See our 304 vs 316 stainless steel guide for the grade decision.

  4. Confirm local adoption. EN 124 is the global reference, but some markets cite regional variants (e.g. AS 3996, BS EN 124-2/3/4/5 by material). Verify which version your authority requires before ordering.

Three Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Under-specifying to save cost. A B125 cover in a D400 roadway will fail. The rebuild — breaking paving, re-bedding the frame, replacing hardscape — costs far more than the original saving.

  • Over-specifying unnecessarily. F900 where A15 suffices adds weight, handling difficulty and cost with no benefit. Right-size to the location.

  • Ignoring the frame and substrate. A cover is only as strong as its installation. The rated load assumes a correctly installed, level frame and proper surround — follow the manufacturer's bedding specification.
